Human brain loves a challenge only If it's within the optimal zone of difficulty. For instance, if you love playing football and try to play it against four years kid, as the game progress, at every point you will win and he will loses. As the game continues, you will keep winning, and the kid will keep losing, and you'll become bored. Because it is too easy to win the kid at every point.
Also if you try to play it against an expert, let's say Messi or Ronaldo, as the game progress, at every point you will lose the motivation due to his possession of the points. Because at every point, he will wins and you will lose. Thus you will become bored. Because it will be very difficult to have a win in the game.
But if you try to play against someone of your equal, say your friend whom you used to play together. As the game progress you will win and he will lose, at some point he will wins and you will lose. You have a better chance of winning maybe two times a row or more consecutively only If you put more effort. If he also put more effort more than you, he could wins more than you. At that threshold you will appreciate the game more than playing it with a four years kid or an expert.
So the message here is that, I don't put all my effort into a task that is outside of my optimal zone of difficulty, because I will quickly lose motivation.
